Go after her. Fuck, don’t sit there and wait for her to call, go after her because that’s what you should do if you love someone, don’t wait for them to give you a sign cause it might never come, don’t let people happen to you, don’t let me happen to you, or her, she’s not a fucking television show or tornado. There are people I might have loved had they gotten on the airplane or run down the street after me or called me up drunk at four in the morning because they need to tell me right now and because they cannot regret this and I always thought I’d be the only one doing crazy things for people who would never give enough of a fuck to do it back or to act like idiots or be entirely vulnerable and honest and making someone fall in love with you is easy and flying 3000 miles on four days notice because you can’t just sit there and do nothing and breathe into telephones is not everyone’s idea of love but it is the way I can recognize it because that is what I do. Go scream it and be with her in meaningful ways because that is beautiful and that is generous and that is what loving someone is, that is raw and that is unguarded, and that is all that is worth anything, really.

Ok, so here’s my problem with this. I’m not usually one to reblog quotes, especially lovey, emotional quotes like this one, but this has given me something to think about. At first, I read this and was all awww, fuck yeah! Then I came back to Wednesday, February 8, 2012, standing in my kitchen, and decided to say fuck you, Harvey Milk.

Quotes (and advice) like this piss me off because it’s just not realistic. Love doesn’t work like this—I wish it did, but this isn’t an episode of Friends. Maybe it’s because I’ve been feeling particularly lonely and thinky lately, but I think most of us know that you can’t force love. I can’t get in my car and drive x-hundred miles and show up at someone’s doorstep and scream I LOVE YOU. I THINK WE’RE MEANT TO BE TOGETHER. AND BECAUSE I’M BEING BOLD AND ROMANTIC, YOU HAVE TO LOVE ME TOO. I just don’t believe in that. I want to, but I can’t. The only thing that sounds like to me, is a big waste of gas, money, and time.

If I could just be bold and honest, and that was enough to make someone love me back, I would. But I can’t just make someone love me, and that’s fair because I can’t be made to love someone else either. Call me a realist, call me cynical, call me a dick. I don’t care. Harvey Milk, you’ve pissed me off. Now somebody prove me wrong.
